An occupational therapist reviews the client’s relevant medical history, completes a physical wheelchair assessment involving functional screening, mat assessment and client measurements, provides wheelchair and seating trials as well as writes a prescription and funding letter as appropriate. The occupational therapists will also scan the client’s living environment to make appropriate adjustments in terms of the client’s living style and accessibility.
An occupational therapist will administer the appropriate functional, cognitive and perceptual assessments as well as discuss the client’s goals and needs to function in his/her environment. With the client, the occupational therapist will set long term and short goals and conduct regularly scheduled therapy sessions to meet the identified objectives using specific cognitive rehabilitative methods. As well, the occupational therapist will re-evaluate progress, document the results and discharge as appropriate.
An occupational therapist will determine the overall accessibility of the home or business environment and identify obstacles to optimal performance in function and mobility. As well, the occupational therapist will report on priority areas to improve accessibility or safety and initiate contact with appropriate resources for installation of adaptive equipment and aids. Functional Advances Inc. uses assessments and modifications in accordance with Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) as well as Health Canada Guidelines.
